What is a Flexible Instruction Day?
Beginning with the 2020-2021 school year, the East Allegheny School District has been approved to provide Flexible Instruction Days (FIDs) and will utilize remote learning in place of a school day canceled due to inclement weather or other emergency situations.
On a Flexible Instruction Day, students will access lessons and assignments through Google Classroom. They are expected to complete lessons for all scheduled classes that day, including special area classes.
-
If the District calls for a Flexible Instruction Day, how will I know?
Students and parents/guardians will be notified of a Flexible Instruction Day through the District’s mass notification system, just as school closings and delays are announced. Notifications will be sent by phone and email and posted on the District’s website.
-
Will every school closure because of inclement weather be considered a Flexible Instruction Day?
The district superintendent has the authority to close school, delay the start of school, or declare a Flexible Instruction Day when needed. Using a Flexible Instruction Day allows learning to continue without disruption or changes to the school calendar, helping to preserve holidays and vacation days.
-
Will students be required to login to each class period on a FID Day?
At the secondary level (grades 7–12), all students are required to log in for first period at 7:40 AM to report their attendance for the day. They will then follow their regular class schedule unless otherwise instructed.
At the elementary level (grades K–6), all students must log in at 8:30 AM to live-stream with their teacher(s). During this session, teachers will explain how to access lessons and assignments in the "Flexible Instruction Days" folder on Google Classroom.
-
If my child has questions about a lesson or assignment during a Remote Learning Day, will teachers be available to answer questions?
On all remote Flexible Instruction Days, teachers will be available during the school day to answer questions through email and Google Classroom.
-
If my child is unable to access the Internet on a Flexible Instruction Day, will he/she be given more time to complete posted assignments?
If a student cannot access the internet or paper copies of the learning activities, they must notify their teacher. Students will have five school days to complete the assignments. If the work is not completed within that time, the student will receive a zero and be marked absent.
