The goal of language instruction educational programs (LIEPs) is to facilitate the development and attainment of English proficiency and academic achievement of students whose native or first language is not English. Without instruction in social and academic English and appropriate support for learning academic content, these students are at risk of losing the educational opportunities provided to non-EL students.
Educating English Learners (ELS) outlines program regulations and guidance related to the education of ELs in Pennsylvania.
If your child does not speak English as their primary language, your child may qualify for instruction in English as a Second Language (ESL) services through the East Allegheny School District. ESL instruction is a part of the East Allegheny School District curriculum and is provided through the Allegheny Intermediate Unit. The following page is a informational program description outlining these services. If qualified for this program, your child will be tested yearly to assess their growth, development, and
continued need for ESL services. You may be interested in our Families for Families program. This group is led by a steering committee of East Allegheny family members who are available to mentor to those in our district who may have similar needs and concerns. The family mentor for ESY is available to assist you at your request.
It is hoped that the district’s ESL Program will prove to be of assistance to you and your family in providing a rich educational experience to your children. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions or require further information.
