• What is Elementary School Counseling?

School Counselors are certified professionals whose education provides them with the unique qualifications to address the academic, career and social/emotional development needs of students. As a professional, Pennsylvania counselors must abide by the Ethical Standards for School Counselors as advocated by the American School Counselors Association and the Pennsylvania School Counselors Association. Their work is also driven by the policies of the East Allegheny School District.

Elementary School Counseling services are available to all students. School counseling services include:

    • Short-term Individual Counseling

      • Short-term individual counseling services are available to all students. Students may request to meet with their school counselor by asking a teacher; parents and teachers may also refer students to their school counselor.

      • The rules of confidentiality are explained to students. Communication between the student, parent, and counselor is encouraged where appropriate.

      • Individual school counseling services intended to be short-term, lasting only a few sessions. School counseling is not meant to replace any therapeutic services that students are already receiving.

      • The duration of individual counseling services may be extended given the nature of the student’s needs.

    • Student Support Groups

      • Group counseling services are available to students at Logan Elementary. Groups are intended to address students’ developmental needs, and can be formed with input from school counselors, teachers, and parents.

      • Students may learn to develop various coping skills during group sessions.

      • Confidentiality cannot be guaranteed during group counseling sessions. However, it will be encouraged to all participants.

      • Group counseling will not interfere with your students’ academic schedule.

    • Classroom Guidance Lessons

      • School counselors teach lessons on various social-emotional topics designed to help them be successful at school and in life.

      • Some topics include: social skills, conflict resolution skills, coping skills,  resiliency, self-esteem, career education, and more.
