EA Senior Steps Into New Junior Commissioner Role
The East Allegheny School District is proud to recognize senior Sophia Sciulli, who was sworn in as North Versailles Township’s first-ever Junior Commissioner this fall at the Board of Commissioners meeting. District Judge Roxanne Eichler administered the oath, marking an important milestone for both the township and the school district as they work together to foster civic engagement among young people.
She first learned about the role from her mother, who once served on the East McKeesport board, and felt inspired to follow in her footsteps. After reading about the opportunity in the district newsletter, she applied in hopes of becoming more engaged in her community.
As a Junior Commissioner, Sciulli acts as a liaison between East Allegheny students and township officials. Her responsibilities include attending public meetings, sharing student perspectives, and reporting on school activities and concerns. She said she makes a point to keep her friends informed about key topics discussed at meetings so “they’re getting the same information as me and staying up to date with what’s happening.” While she doesn’t have a set list of issues she plans to address, she approaches the role with openness, responding to topics that arise in the school community and offering input when she feels it is needed.
Sciulli credits East Allegheny’s teachers for encouraging her to pursue leadership roles. “A lot of their work goes unnoticed, and they really believe in the students they have,” she said. “They always made me feel like I could do anything.”
After attending several meetings, Sciulli’s interest in local government has only grown. She hopes to continue learning about what shapes her neighborhood and contribute positively to the community. The district is proud to support her as she carries this passion for public service into her senior year and beyond.
