Freddie’s Legacy Lives On in East Allegheny’s Championship Show
The East Allegheny Marching Band has once again proven that dedication, creativity, and teamwork lead to musical greatness. This season, the band earned its 11th consecutive first-place finish at the regional Tournament of Bands and celebrated its second straight Pennsylvania State Championship title in Altoona.
Under the direction of Justin Rosco, the band captivated audiences with a powerful show built around the legendary music of Queen and its iconic frontman, Freddie Mercury.
“When selecting a show, I keep in mind four things: our strengths, weaknesses, what the kids can get behind, and what audiences will enjoy. Queen’s music checked all those boxes this year,” said Mr. Rosco.
Known for its emotion, energy, and theatrical flair, Queen’s music was a perfect fit. “This group of kids really connected with it, and it showed. You could feel the energy on the field during competition,” Mr. Rosco added.
Students also shaped the performance. Band class members contributed ideas for visuals and choreography, demonstrating these to the full ensemble during rehearsals and adding a collaborative spirit to the process.
Creating the music was a thoughtful, lengthy process. “Once an artist is selected, I listen to originals, arrangements, covers, and different genres. I use a formula to fit music and story together,” Mr. Rosco explained.
Among the selections, Bohemian Rhapsody was the most challenging. Its fast tempos, unusual time signatures, and high-energy ending tested the band both musically and physically, demanding stamina and focus from every member.
Visually, the show was inspired by Freddie Mercury, portrayed by senior William Wilson. “Freddie was the ultimate entertainer, passionate about being different. He embodied what Queen was all about, which is why we use him to tell the story,” said Mr. Rosco. He added that Wilson’s portrayal captured Mercury’s boldness and charisma, tying the musical and visual storytelling together.
Despite the pressures of competition, Mr. Rosco emphasized that fun and meaning remain central. “We aim to produce shows that are not only competitive but memorable and enjoyable for students and audiences alike.”
Beyond trophies, the experience is what truly matters. “I am proud of these students. They may not be the most experienced group, but they perform as if they’ve been doing it for decades. They represent East Allegheny with pride and professionalism.”
Mr. Rosco expressed deep gratitude to all who supported the band this season. He praised seniors and student leaders for their maturity and leadership. He also thanked parents who chaperoned, organized fundraisers, helped with concessions, and managed equipment logistics every week. Finally, he acknowledged the administration and school board for their ongoing support.
As the final notes of Bohemian Rhapsody echoed across the field in Altoona, the East Allegheny Marching Band once again delivered a champion-worthy performance that honored Queen’s legacy and celebrated the talent and dedication of East Allegheny’s finest musicians.
