On May 6th, East Allegheny High School students joined over 150 students from 10 area schools for Senator Nick Pisciottano’s inaugural Student Government Seminar. The event gave students an inside look at how state government operates, including a hands-on experience during a mock Senate session where they introduced, debated, and voted on a mock bill.

Morning Sessions: Learning About Government

The seminar began with two key sessions designed to give students a deeper understanding of state government. Session I: State Government – How it Really Works explored how laws are made in Pennsylvania, the role of lobbyists, and the influence of grassroots efforts on legislation. Students learned how their actions and the actions of the media and their families can help shape the laws that affect their lives.

In Session II: Choosing a Party & Picking Issues, students discussed political ideologies, including what it means to be a Democrat, Republican, or independent. They also explored the difference between liberal, conservative, and moderate views, which helped students think critically about their own political beliefs and the issues that matter to them.

Afternoon Session: Mock Senate Debate

Students were first split into party caucuses, where they discussed the bill, selected party leaders, and decided whether to support, oppose, or amend the legislation. After caucusing, the students participated in the mock Senate session, with Senator Pisciottano serving as the President of the Senate.

During the session, students debated the pros and cons of social media protections, considering issues like privacy, free speech, and the role of government in regulating online platforms. This hands-on experience allowed students to step into the shoes of lawmakers and experience the challenges of crafting and debating legislation.
