Pathway Scholars: Preparing Students for Life After High School

Group of students and administrators who are part of the programThe Pathway Scholars Program at East Allegheny High School is designed to support underrepresented students, particularly students of color in preparing for life beyond high school. The program pairs high school students with Duquesne University undergraduates who act as peer mentors, offering guidance on career exploration, financial literacy, goal-setting, and life skills. The program includes weekly workshops, a campus visit to Duquesne University, and opportunities for seniors to shadow current university students.

Group of people at a poster session discussing researchPreliminary findings suggest that many students feel unprepared for life after high school and primarily seek guidance from school counselors. The program is also engaging parents and caregivers by hosting workshops that cover college applications, financial aid, and post-secondary options like apprenticeships and military service. These workshops provide resources for students from families with limited financial resources and ensure a smooth transition for students after high school.

The program’s long-term goal is to create sustainable resources, including toolkits for schools and community organizations, to continue supporting students and fostering equitable opportunities for college and career readiness. Additionally, the program focuses on building peer-to-peer relationships, fostering community involvement, and addressing the unique needs of vulnerable student populations, ensuring that they are better equipped to make informed decisions about their futures.
