From the High School Principal

As Principal of the East Allegheny High School, I am looking forward to the start of the 2009-2010 school year.  I am asking that all faculty members, parents, guardians, and students become familiar with those goals which surround our current mission and vision. The East Allegheny High School will continue to incorporate methods and practices designed to help young adults become and remain life-long learners, preparing them for post secondary education, and the 21st century work force.  The East Allegheny School District will strive to promote academic and social excellence for all students.  We will continue to incorporate proven methods of change that will serve as a guide to all students within the East Allegheny High School.

Written within our current plan, we will incorporate academic instruction that is directly related to individual student readiness and interest prescribed by assessment measures aligned with state and national standards.  Once again, these methods of instruction, assessment, and teaching are designed to help our students become and remain life-long learners, preparing them for post secondary education and the 21st century work force.  Furthermore, these methods will help our students demonstrate academic proficiency in all curricular areas.  This will allow our district to move towards our goal of having all students attain a level of proficiency in reading and/or math in order to meet the growth standard for each content area.

Teachers:

I am asking that all teachers assume their professional responsibilities of becoming and remaining lead learners.  As professionals, I am asking that you apply your professional responsibilities in a manner that will allow for a smooth and effective transition of the adoption process.  This adoption of anchors and eligible content will permit the incorporation of reading, writing, and math across the curriculum. However, for this transition to be meaningful and student centered, the following must be accomplished within each separate department:

1.      Compare your adopted Anchor profile to PSSA proficiency.  Make certain that you are looking for high areas of individual student need.  Make certain you have your students perform that anchor as assessed on the PSSA.

2.      Compare your adopted Anchor profile to the PSSA test blueprint and make certain that your areas of departmental emphasis compare with the state testing emphasis.

3.      Within your departmental areas, compare the test scores with your adopted anchors and fine-tune them so they can be distributed and taught in a manner that fits best and is similar for all students.

These implementations are aligned directly with those goals surrounding our mission and vision.  Once again – the promotion of life-long learning designed to have a direct impact on the 21st century.  These methods of instruction will improve academic performance for all students in an equal and effective manner.  Secondary math and English teachers cannot continue to carry the load in making certain that all students are proficient in those core areas.  This is a professional responsibility surrounding every teacher, administrator, and paraprofessional within any school of education.  I look forward to assisting you in meeting those goals directly related to our individual students and those surrounding school wide Annual Yearly Progress.

Parents, Guardians, and Community:

This year, as parents / guardians,  I am asking that you will support our children’s learning in the following ways:

· Monitoring attendance – make certain that our children are arriving to school at the appropriate time and make sure that an excuse is given to the office for every absence.

· Making sure that homework is completed – observe and maintain a schedule for completing and discussing homework.  Hold them accountable for their education.

· Hold our teachers and Principal accountable for our children’s education – call and talk with teachers often and make certain our children are developing academically.

· Volunteer for any programs that parents may be eligible – attend the open house sessions – schedule parent conferences – call the homework hotline – remain and become involved with our children’s education.

· Staying informed about our children’s education and communicating with the school by promptly reading all notices from the school or the school district either received by my child or by mail and responding, as appropriate.

· Support the school discipline policy – monitor, remind, and expect our children to come and follow the rules governing our school.

· Ensure that my child dresses in accordance with the school dress code policy – this is extremely important and we need your assistance in making certain this policy is honored and respected by all students.

In the past years, the East Allegheny School District has proven that it is one of the finest schools in Western Pennsylvania.  With your help, we will continue to improve academically.  Academic promotion will permit all of our students the opportunity to compete in the 21st century workforce and succeed in post-secondary and college placement.
I am asking that all parents, guardians, and community members - Please assist the East Allegheny High School, during this school year, in helping our students realize and perform to their potential!  Parents and guardians are the first and most important teachers. We must have your help to succeed in our mission!

Students:

As students, I am asking that you share the responsibility to improve your academic achievement by achieving those standards specified by the state of Pennsylvania. Specifically, I am asking that you implement the following:

· Do all class and homework every day and ask for help when needed – expect your teachers to facilitate your learning and discuss your education with them often.

· Read at least 30 minutes every day outside of school time – review those concepts taught and come back the following day with questions for your teachers.  “Expect to Understand All Academic Content and Apply it in a Meaningful manner”

· Give your parents or the adult who is responsible for your welfare all notices and information received by me from my school every day – make certain that they are aware of all school / academic responsibilities issued to you.

· Ask for help when I don’t understand – have expectations for your teachers – if you do not understand a concept “Ask For Help!”

· Achieve as near perfect attendance as possible – come to school every day and make certain you have an excuse when you return “Every Time You Are Absent!”

· Dress according to the accepted dress code as outlined by the East Allegheny High School Board – this is a responsibility you MUST be held accountable for – the handbook will be enforced.

· Come to school each day with pens, pencils, paper and other necessary tools for learning.
